MP Opposes Proposed West Dereham Travellers Site

Terry Jermy MP has written to Kings Lynn & West Norfolk Borough Council objecting to the proposal for 10 mobile homes and caravan pitches on land at West Dereham just off Station Road.

Jermy, Member of Parliament for South West Norfolk, said, “First and foremost this is not a sustainable location for the build. The facts are this is an ill-thought-out plan that would not be of long-term benefit to anyone in the community.

“This is a small rural area with minimal facilities. The proposed site is remote from local services alongside the unsuitability of the road access to the site, visual impact as well as the potential of flooding.”

The Stoke Ferry Internal Drainage Board have also voiced their concerns, outlining that the area is not suitable and prone to flooding. “Preliminary infiltration testing onsite has shown infiltration is very poor and it is therefore proposed to discharge surface water to a ditch.”

Jermy added, “Whilst I fully support the aim of providing additional sites for the Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller community, I cannot agree that this proposed site is in any way suitable. I have received numerous correspondence from constituents on this matter wanting a resolution and I wholeheartedly agree with their legitimate concerns and believe the proposal should not move ahead.”

West Dereham Parish Council commented on the issue, reiterating that the proposed site is unstainable and back the local constituents and MPs stance.

“West Dereham Parish Council endorses Terry Jermy MP’s support in opposing this most inappropriate re-application for a traveller site comprising 10 static homes with an additional 10 tourer pitches. Mr Jermy’s comments reflect the reasons why this proposal is unsustainable on many levels including accessibility, location, lack of amenities and a site which is susceptible to flooding on a regular basis.”
