Government announce new flood defence schemes in South West Norfolk

Three schemes in South West Norfolk receive the go ahead with fresh government funding this year, helping to protect 27,000 more homes and businesses.

South West Norfolk will benefit from three new flood schemes totalling over £4.5m. The schemes will help protect homes and businesses as well as boosting the local economy.

The announcement follows the Labour government’s earlier commitment to invest a record £2.65 billion over two years towards the construction of new flood schemes and the repair and maintenance of existing ones, the Environment Agency has today (31 March 2025) published a list of the communities across the nation to benefit from projects this year.

With this investment, the construction of schemes can now be kickstarted or progress closer to completion in South West Norfolk. Schemes to receive funding include the Magdalen Fen Flood Risk Management Scheme, the Ten Mile – Embankment and Little Ouse Sluices.

Terry Jermy MP, Labour Member of Parliament for South West Norfolk welcomed the government’s announcement: “I am delighted the Government has confirmed over £4.5m of funding for our area. I’ve been lobbying for improved flood defences over the past few months as we know our part of the region is highly susceptible to flooding. The Government has recognised this by putting a significant 26% uplift per year in flood investment”.

“The environment is the economy in South West Norfolk and Labour are investing in this to make sure peoples livelihoods, lives, and homes are protected” he added.

Floods Minister Emma Hardy said: “I know from firsthand experience the devastating impacts that flooding can cause.

“The role of Government is to protect its citizens. However, we inherited flood defences in their worst

condition on record following 14 years of Conservative neglect.

“Through our Plan for Change, we are supporting three schemes in South West Norfolk, ensuring residents have the long-term protection they need, while boosting local growth and creating new jobs.”

The Government has prioritised £140 million to ensure 29 major schemes in progress but struggling with cost pressures can be delivered without further delays, protecting nearby communities as soon as possible.

Inevitably it will not be possible to fund all of the many schemes on our pipeline in this coming year’s flood investment programme. Where schemes have not been funded, local EA teams will continue to work with councils and flood groups to ensure the public in these areas are prepared and the flood risk for both residents and businesses is reduced.
